Construction is one of those industries where it is definitely possible to work your way up from the bottom. Site labourer to site manager is a long journey but there are people out there who have done it.
I’ve interviewed a cross-section of construction workers over the past 3 or 4 months: people at the beginning of their careers and some coming towards the end. One comment kept cropping up though, and that was about the need for enthusiastic, hard-working young people to enter the industry. It’s interesting to hear about demand for young entrants at a time when that isn’t the message we’re generally hearing.
Recently, I spoke to Adam, a labourer at the David Wilson Homes site in Sutton in Ashfield. He enjoys what he does, but has hopes of some day moving up the ladder. Here’s a quick clip.
